This IDD was designed for the Civic Engagement staff at Hamkae Center, a grassroots, nonpartisan nonprofit that supports the Asian American community in northern Virginia. HC staff reviewed it to approve the creation of their Canvassing 101 e-course, which was geared towards Hamkae Center's new part-time trainee canvassers.
As many of Hamkae Center's trainees are new to canvassing and were given limited training prior to entering the field, they have difficulty navigating MiniVAN, a canvassing app, and engaging with difficult voters when out in the community. Additionally, Hamkae Center staff spend too much time in the field training canvassers and developing their confidence. Thus, the challenge was to build an engaging and informative e-course that exposed learners to common voting scenarios while fostering mastery of essential canvassing skills before entering the field.
This IDD outlines the development of Hamkae Center's Canvassing 101 e-learning course. Skills covered include navigating the MiniVAN app and encouraging voting despite voters' concerns, frustrations, and/or questions. Through video demonstrations, interactive elements and scenarios, assessment questions, and feedback for correct and incorrect answers, the course cultivates learners' canvassing skills and voting knowledge so they can encourage civic engagement when out in the field.
